Johann Zechmeister draws. The drawing is essential for him. He likes drawing because it is quick and spontaneous. “I start to draw and the result is open, the lines are sprawling across the paper”. For Zechmeister, drawing is ‘thinking with the pencil’.
Despite his love for drawing, the artist also likes painting. Here it’s the color and the possibility to work on a larger scale, which appeal to him. Zechmeister sees painting as a more complex working process, in which painting over previous layers creates new image space and planes.
