Maria Schumacher

In general my painting is self-referential. It is a character field that refines, negates, reveals, and at the same time conceals the course of its genesis. In doing so, I am partially transparent and delicate, partially opaque and rough, removing old oil layers with the sanding machine. By this method, the image area is unified again, but traces and colorants from all previous work steps are preserved as small particles. The 'Biography of the Image’ occurs. The creative process itself is always at the forefront, although this is not only addressed in further steps but also commented and ‘exploited’.
Recycling means here that reacting to remains and previous (doubtful) decisions. Every gesture, every step in the work, and every new layer in the picture is questioned and ultimately contributes only as a fraction to the visible whole. Frequently checked layers, which are frequently sealed with a spontaneous gesture, as a signature, generate the image.
By uncovering the process of creation, my paintings remain open. They talk about their fictitious ending or, conversely, about their possible endlessness.
